Beautiful baskets as a meeting of Kenyan craftsmanship and Scandinavian design!
The MIFUKO brand was created in 2009 by two Finnish women, Minna Impiö and Mari Martikainen, both graduates of the University of Textile and Design Art in Helsinki. In 2009, Minna was living in Kenya with her family, and the idea was born between the two women to create the Mifuko society, combining Finnish design and Kenyan craft techniques.
The baskets are hand-made by women in self-help groups in rural villages in the Machakos region near Nairobi. Most of these women artisans work on farms, but weaving baskets for Mifuko throughout the year allows them to survive financially, especially during the dry season, or during periods of poor harvests or drought.
Mifuko is a certified member of the World Fair Trade Organization and all products are made according to Fair Trade principles.
